The Beginning

It was probably around the time that I turned 27 that I started getting excited about turning 30. This is not to say that I was wishing time away AT ALL, but because I have many friends that vary in age, I saw that entering this new decade can be tough on some. I wanted to be ready to embrace it. Plus, I like to make plans and create challenges for myself! When we were 29, we started talking more seriously about how to make 30 AWESOME, and one idea we both loved was travelling to 30 places. This idea stemmed from a road trip conversation where we tried to list all of the places we had been to in the last year. We set a rule that each place had to be at least an hour away, and were amazed by our list (it helps to live in the mountains, at least an hour away from pretty much everything!). Once we started sharing our 30/30 Travel Challenge idea with others, we realized we had to set some rules for "what counts" (Thank you Krista for making me think this through a little more!). Here's what we're starting out with:

Start Date: July 28, 2014
End Date: Feb 1, 2016
Total length of time for travel: approximately 18 months (one of us will be 29 for the first few months, and the other will be 31 for the last few months)
  • Must be at least one hour away from where we are
  • Same location cannot be counted twice
  • At least five locations must require plane tickets
  • Must require some sort of packing
  • Trips must be taken together or both go to the same place at separate times
Our thoughtful friend Krista suggested the following additions to our rules, which we will certainly consider and try our best to fulfill! Her thinking was that there could be 6 categories with 5 of each type trip in each (6x5=30... a little math thrown in there- she must know Will!)

5 plane rides
5 different time zones
5 trips with friends
5 places you've never ever been to before
5 places without mountains (haha she knows us too well- this one might be the most challenging!)
5 involving water/snow

If you have any further suggestions, ideas, questions, we would love to hear from you!

Here we go!!
